WOOD DAYS LOVES ITS NEW HOME

Wood Days, an event like no other, is settling into its new home, (and date- the first weekend in June). After 16 years at Canterbury Shaker Village Wood Days moved last June 1 1/4 miles up Shaker Road to Dave and Anne Emerson’s Old Ways Traditions. The many elements of the event- great food, old time and traditional music, demonstrations of a large variety of woodworking skills, hands on woodworking for kids and adults, and antique tools and machinery for all to try and/or see operating have proven to be a fine fit in their new location.

Dave’s old business of 20 years, Shaker Pine, burned in a spectacular fire 7 years ago. It’s been reincarnated as Old Ways Traditions and reinvented as the new location for Wood Days and its sister event, Old Ways Days, the third weekend in October. The fire provided the impetus for a rebuild that has worked out well for the events and for our woodworking-environmental program which now has its own space in our main building.

For June 6 & 7, with the support of our sponsors Woodcraft of Newington and Brentwood Machinery and Tools we’ve put together another fun and fascinating event. Logging, turning, timber framing, basket making and furniture making will be some of  the woodworking demonstrations. Mike Cook, our blacksmith, will help you try your hand at the forge. You can use springpole and treadle lathes and watch bowls being turned on a steam engine powered lathe. Many Hand tools are available to try from planes and drills to froe, crosscut saw and shaving horses. You can experiment with different woods and follow the trails to see the trees they came from and explore how an original New England farm was organized. See tools being made and buy antique tools. Music will be provided by Bow Junction and Geddes Road Band on Saturday, Grass Dawgs and Jack Pine Holdouts on Sunday. The Maples of Warner will feed us well.
